Curvature Sobel - Resolution Consistent



Creates a curvature map from a normal map using a Sobel filter. Includes a modification for more consistent results across resolution settings.

Version 2 and higher can switch between standard Curvature Sobel and the resolution independent modification. An option for calibrating the resolution independence relative to a final export resolution is also available when the modification is activated by selecting it from the drop down menu. Setting this to the final export resolution will prevent excessive intensity in the curvature result within the 0-1 intensity range that might drown out finer details otherwise visible at higher resolutions.

@piotrcrass The node is actually intended for use in Substance Designer, not SP.

It's meant as an extension or replacement for the existing Curvature Sobel node in SD since it contains that functionality as well. It's main use would be to drive generators where it produces a different result to the existing Sobel depending on resolution and setting which can be more useful in certain scenarios.

There are two ways of working with the calibration option:

1 If you set the calibration at something high like 8k (or whatever your final res is) and work in lower res, you will never appear to lose detail when switching to 8k due to that detail shrinking from the resolution change, the opposite is usually the case when selecting the resolution independent option with a high res setting. As you move higher in resolution, more layers of detail become visible rather than shrinking. So at low resolutions it gives you the general look and at high it adds all the smaller details while the look of the texture is maintained. This kind of setup maintains all the details, it won't drown anything out through excessive intensity settings under the hood.

2 A second way is to set the calibration at your work resolution, this will ensure that what you see in your work resolution will be kept more or less consistent as you move higher in resolution. However, because it does this by increasing the curvature intensity, it can clip values. At the end of the day it's an option that might work better depending on what you're doing.

To use it in SP, you would have to create some specific tool, a generator, filter or other substance, that integrates it as part of it's functionality or you could plug it into the Curvature input of a mask generator in SP and apply a normal map to it's input instead. As I said, this wasn't intended as a stand-alone SP filter.
